The Hills

Race report by 58&fam

It’s funny how a race can be shorter on paper, yet feel so much bigger in every other way.

Even though this year’s edition of The hills Gravel was almost 60 km shorter than last year, it left a deeper mark. Not just physically, but mentally too.

Where last year tested us with rain, mud, and pure survival, this year offered something entirely different. Blue skies, warm sun, and landscapes so beautiful it was hard to believe we were actually racing through them. At times, it felt almost peaceful.

But the course had its own plans.

Relentless, steep climbs that forced you to dig deeper than expected (and reminded us—again—that gear choices matter), technical descents demanding full focus, and flowing singletrack that rewarded those who still had something left to give. It was a different kind of toughness. Less about enduring the elements, more about handling the terrain—and yourself.

For Nathalie the day came to an unexpected end with a mechanical. A tough reminder that no matter how prepared you are, some things are simply out of your control. Hopefully a one-time experience.

Maja carried the day forward with grit and determination, staying present through every climb and descent, and finishing with a strong top 5 in the Women 30+ age group.

Races like this leave you with more than just a result. They leave you with perspective. Lessons. And a quiet motivation to come back—better prepared, a little wiser, and still just as curious about where the limit really is.
